Fast Facts for the Expectant Mare

Expectant MaresTypical Gestation Length: 330-355 days (our practice has seen 370 day gestation period)

Colts tend to have longer gestation periods than fillies.

Mares that are due early in the year generally have a longer gestation period than those due later in the year.

The udder should not develop more than 2-4 weeks prior to the due date and milk should never drip from the udder of an expectant mare… if noted, contact a veterinarian!

A foal decides the day of delivery and the mare decides the hour.

Remember the 1-2-3 rule: Once labor begins the foal should be born within 1 hour, stand and nurse within 2 hours, and the mare should expel the placenta within 3 hours.
